Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Sept. 24-25

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 24, the 267th day of the year — 98 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1968, the newsmagazine broadcast program “60 Minutes” made its debut on CBS. It was modeled after a similar show in Canada named “W5” that debuted two years earlier.

Here & Now

• Ready to be whisked back to the Revolutionary War?

The Battle of Rhode Island Association will team with the Portsmouth Conservation Commission to present "Walking the Battlefield" today at 11 a.m. at Heritage Park, located off Hedley Street in Portsmouth.

Visitors will be guided through the action of The Battle of Rhode Island that took place Aug. 29, 1778. Learn more here.

• We're inside a week before "Hocus Pocus 2" debuts on Disney+ on Sept. 30, and as you know, Newport will play a starring role. Learn about the sequel here.

• Newport Craft will be hosting an Oktoberfest event today from noon to 5 p.m. It's free to go, just pay for what you drink. Learn more here.

• Congratulations to Newport native and Salve Regina graduate Rebecca Souza, who recently was named the director of nursing services at the Vermont Veterans Home, located in my old stomping grounds of Bennington. Read more about her appointment here.

• More congrats go out to Fort Barton Elementary School in Tiverton, one of only three schools in the state to be named a National Blue Ribbon Award winner from the U.S. Department of Education.

• If you don't know the name Alex Clemmey, you soon will. The Middletown resident recently suited up for Team USA at the World Baseball Softball Confederation under-18 World Cup, helping the Americans win  the gold medal.

“There’s nothing better than representing your country. It can’t be compared to anything," the left-handed pitcher said. Read about his experience here.

• The New England Patriots host the high-powered Baltimore Ravens for a 1 p.m. game Sunday. Send your best prediction (winner and final score) to sbarrett@newportri.com, and whoever comes closest gets a shout Monday. For what it's worth, I'm picking the Ravens to win 31-20.
