Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 9-10

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 9, the 190th day of the year — 175 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1877, the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club opened its first tournament at Wimbledon, with 21 amateurs competing for a trophy worth 25 guineas.

Here & Now

• One event that didn't make it into Editor Will Richmond's roundup of things to do this weekend is the Newport Kite Festival, set to take place Saturday and Sunday at Brenton Point State Park. This really is a sight to be seen.

From towering kites fit for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to traditional diamond-shaped ones, enthusiasts of all ages come to Newport to participate in the annual festival. I covered it for the newspaper a couple of years back and spoke with some of the attendees about the draw of kite flying. I also made this fancy video.

This year's festival is dedicated to Susan L. Moskowitz, who died in November. She was an avid kite flyer and opened High Flyers Flight Company, a shop on Thames Street. This will mark the first official Newport Kite Festival since the start of the COVID pandemic, so if you find yourself with nothing to do, check it out.

• Ever climb inside the historic windmill at Prescott Farm in Middletown? The Newport Restoration Foundation is inviting visitors to do just that and more on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Learn more here.

• The 61st annual Summer Church Fair, hosted by the United Congressional Church of Little Compton, is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be children's games, a dog show, a performance by the Toe Jam Puppet Band and other attractions. Learn more here.

• Nathan Nevarez, a rising eighth-grader at St. Philomena School, needs your vote in the annual Google Doodle contest so he can be a national finalist. All you have to do is click this link, find the Grades 6-7 category and vote for Rhode Island. It's that simple.

• Competitors from 12 states, the United Kingdom and Canada will hit Narragansett Bay for the two-day Newport Regatta on Saturday and Sunday. Learn more here.

• The qualifying rounds of the Infosys Hall of Fame Open will take place Sunday at the Newport Casino. General admission tickets are $25. Purchase them here.

• Speaking of tennis, the Newport Recreation Department has released its 2022 tournament schedule. Frank Gaj always does a great job with this each and every year. Check it out below.
