Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for May 28-30

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is May 28, the 148th day of the year — 217 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1937, the German government, then under the rule of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, formed a state-owned automobile company called Volkswagenwerk, or “The People’s Car Company.”

Here & Now

• Of course there will be barbecues and good times had this Memorial Day weekend, but there are also plenty of events scheduled to honor the servicemen and servicewomen who lost their lives in combat:

• The Newport American Legion Post No. 7 and the Newport Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a Memorial Day ceremony on the steps of Newport City Hall on Monday at noon. Guest speaker will be retired Navy Capt. Mark Turner. At 11 a.m., a separate ceremony will be held at Storer Park to honor soldiers lost a sea.

• The Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 18 will host a Memorial Day event at Legion Park (near Town Hall) on Monday at 9 a.m. Guest speaker will be retired Army veteran William ‘Bill’ McCollum. Find the full program here.

• U.S. Sen. Jack Reed will deliver remarks and serve as the Honorary Parade Marshal at Jamestown’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday at 10 a.m. It steps off at the corner of Lawn and Watson avenues.

• The Boots on the Ground for Heroes memorial at Fort Adams State Park will be open to the public Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Memorial Day. On Sunday, a Patriotic Concert featuring the 88th Army Band of the Rhode Island National Guard is scheduled for 5 p.m.

• There is no shortage of statues, memorials and markers in Newport County saluting war heroes who served and died in a number of conflicts. Check out our comprehensive list (and perhaps even visit one this weekend).

• Newport Polo will get its 2022 season underway with the Rotary Club of Newport charity match. Learn more and purchase tickets here.

• On Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m., Newport County residents for free can Roam Around Rough Point. Learn more here.

• The Point Association of Newport will conduct its Annual Plant Sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon on the lawn of St. John the Evangelist Church. Learn more here.

• Closed to the public since the start of the COVID pandemic, the Portsmouth Historical Society has undergone "major upgrades." It will reopen Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at 870 East Main Road. Learn more here.

• According to a recent study, Rhode Island ranks No. 8 on a list of states with the highest percentage of veteran-owned businesses. Additionally, the Providence/Warwick region is a top-10 city nationally. Find the full breakdown here.

• Remember reporter Savana Dunning's recent story on Vanessa Baker, the Portsmouth woman leading the fight on a smoking ban inside Rhode Island casinos? Well, Bally's announced Friday smoking no longer will be permitted at table games.

• Rise & Shine! is taking the Memorial Day holiday off, but I'll be right back in your bright and early on Tuesday. Have a safe and happy weekend!
