Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Sept. 3-5
Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Sept. 3, the 246th day of the year — 119 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1995, the electronic commerce website eBay — originally known as AuctionWeb — was launched by computer programmer Pierre Omidyar.
Here & Now
• Three years ago, I approached Editor Will Richmond with an idea: "I think I want to start writing a morning email newsletter to give Newport County a guide to the day. It'll be filled with headlines and happenings and other tidbits. It'll be called Rise & Shine!"
He approved, and I started to put the framework together. I listen to good friend Bobb Angel (and Jane) on WADK in the morning, and they give a rundown of national days. "It's not just a Tuesday," Bobb says. "It's not?" Jane replies. I liked it, so I decided to add that into the newsletter.
In the moments before signing off, Bobb also provides a list of celebrity birthdays (and local ones, too). I felt that would be a strong addition to what I was building.
I'm also a big proponent of public information and community involvement, so I wanted to make sure people were aware of municipal meetings happening that day, while also highlighting important agenda items. And then, of course, there was the weather forecast.
The first edition was published Sept. 3, 2019, exactly three years ago. Along the way, I've added wrinkles (Trivia Tuesday, Where in Newport County? and Blast from the Past), but my mission has remained the same — to inform.
My audience has grown exponentially over the course of three years, from some 900 the first day to better than 7,600 today. I'd like to say I have a very engaged group of readers who inspire me to put out a quality product every morning.
So a big thank you goes out to each and every one of you who start your day with me. And here's to many more years to come.
• If you're looking for something to do this weekend, look no further than Sail Newport, which is hosting a Community Day on Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can tour the docked boats American Promise and Maiden, meet the trailblazing women sailors and experience sailing aboard J/22 vessels. • Speaking of sailing, the IYRS Classic Yacht Regatta is happening this weekend, with the parade of boats scheduled for Sunday morning at 10:15 a.m. A good viewing spot is Perrotti Park. Learn more here.

• As mentioned earlier this week, the Escobar Farm Corn Maze is now open and there will be a special attraction happening Saturday — fireworks at dusk.
• More fireworks will be lighting up the sky Sunday in the Island Park section of Portsmouth. Learn more here.
• Newport Craft on Sunday is hosting a free Kids Construction Day that will include raffles, giveaways and goodies from Wally's Wieners. Learn more here.
