Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for May 14-15

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is May 14, the 134th day of the year — 231 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1904, the first U.S. Summer Olympics opened in St. Louis. The Games initially were awarded to Chicago, but shifted to St. Louis to be staged alongside the St. Louis World’s Fair, which ultimately overshadowed the athletic competition.

• When I was growing up, I was enamored with the movie "Clue," based on the Hasbro board game. I knew every word and watched it over and over until the VHS tape grew worn. Theater students at Portsmouth Abbey School will stage their rendition of the comedy tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the school. Learn more here.

• Speaking of school events, the Rogers High Class of 2024 is holding a fundraising car wash Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at People's Credit Union on Memorial Boulevard. Cash or Venmo is accepted. Learn more here.

• From a standpoint of wins and losses, it hasn't been the best four years for the seniors on the Tiverton and Portsmouth softball teams, but it was never really about the results. Sports reporter Steve Rogers has the story.

• From the inbox: According to a recent survey, 24% of Americans avoided getting an eye exam during the COVID-19 pandemic despite the fact they needed one. And 2 out of 5 respondents say their eyesight have gotten worse in the past two years, potentially because of more screen time. Find full results of the survey here.

• Have a safe and happy weekend!
