Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for Aug. 20-21

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is Aug. 20, the 232nd day of the year — 133 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1619, slavery in the United States began when “20 and odd” Africans, kidnapped by the Portuguese, were transported to Jamestown, Virginia.

Here & Now

• Truth be told, I've never been on a sailboat, which is kind of hard to believe considering for 13 years I was a sports editor in the "Sailing Capital of the World." I had my opportunities — as recently as last month — but seemingly something always came up and I had to pass.

While I don't exactly have an affinity for sailing itself, I am interested in the sport — specifically the America's Cup. My dad was into it as well, and I can vividly recall us watching the 1988 races between the Americans aboard a fast catamaran and the Kiwis on their monstrous monohull.

A little before my time was the last America's Cup competition held in Newport, in 1983, when the Australia II defeated Dennis Conner and Liberty. It's considered one of the greatest upsets in sporting history and ended New York Yacht Club's 132-year stranglehold on the Auld Mug.

For the 30-year anniversary in 2013 (the 39th will be Sept. 26), I wrote this piece. It's one of my favorite stories I've written. A year later, I had the opportunity to interview Australian skipper John Bertrand when he returned to Newport 31 years after making history.

Earlier this week, I learned there's a Netflix documentary titled "Race of the Century" slated to be released Sept. 6. To say I'm eager to watch it is an understatement. You can view the trailer here.

• It's rare I find myself in Warren, but that's the hometown of Daily News reporter Zane Wolfang, who strongly recommends attending the Warren Folks Fest happening today from 1 to 7 p.m. Learn more here.

• If you're looking to get away from pretty much everybody, perhaps you can go exploring at the John C. Whitehead Preserve in Little Compton. It has a number of different paths that lead to Dundery Brook. Learn more about the area here.

• Rise & Shine! readers Maury Bric and Patrick O'Connell came to the rescue to identify the former Rogers High football players in the Blast from the Past photo in yesterday's edition. They are, from left, Ron Cooper, Jack Dutra and Barry Carroll.

• The annual reading of George Washington's letter to the Hebrew congregation in Newport is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. While there is limited space inside Touro Synagogue, where the event will be held, it will be streamed on its Facebook page.

• A fond farewell to Salve Regina athletic director Jody Mooradian, who is retiring next month. Jody always picked up the phone when I called and answered all my questions through the years. She also helped take Salve sports up a notch.

• From the inbox: Inflation seems to be a buzz word these days, but which U.S. city is feeling the pinch the most? According to a recent study, that would be Anchorage, Alaska. Boston comes in at No. 21 on the list, which you can check out here.

• Have a safe and happy weekend!
