Rita Wilson sings for NASCAR after COVID-19 recovery, will host Kenny Rogers tribute

Rita Wilson is getting out and about as much as she can in a coronavirus world.

The singer, 63, has been making the virtual rounds since she announced her recovery from COVID-19. Wilson and husband Tom Hanks were both diagnosed a month ago with the novel virus while in Australia, and have since returned home to Los Angeles.

Since her homecoming, Wilson has kept busy, singing the "The Star-Spangled Banner" for a virtual NASCAR race on Fox Sunday. Filmed at her LA home by 24-year-old son Truman Hanks, according to NASCAR announcers Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon, Wilson offered a soulful rendition of the national anthem before the broadcast of the third social distance NASCAR race so far. Due to the pandemic the regular NASCAR season has been suspended, but drivers are racing via simulators, not unlike arcade games.

Wilson will also appear on CMT Wednesday (8 p.m. ET/PT) for “CMT GIANTS Kenny Rogers: A Benefit For MusiCares,” the network announced Monday. The singer will virtually host the broadcast honoring the musical icon, who died in March at 75 after a battle with cancer. Other acts appearing virtually include Dolly Parton, Gavin DeGraw, Lady Antebellum and Lionel Richie, and all proceeds of the benefit will go to coronavirus relief.

Wilson's son Colin Hanks has also been a regular online presence throughout the pandemic, and has recently turned to his Instagram to show tutorials for making surgical masks at home. The CDC recommended Friday that all Americans wear face masks (but not medical grade masks) in public to help stop the spread of the virus.

On March 11, Tom Hanks revealed on social media that he and Wilson had both tested positive for COVID-19 in one of the first instances of celebrities revealing their coronavirus diagnoses. The couple was tested in Australia, where Hanks was scheduled to shoot a new film about Elvis Presley that has since been postponed. Hanks' representative Francesca Ciuffo also confirmed the diagnosis to USA TODAY.

In a statement shared on social media March 28, Hanks announced that he and Wilson had returned to the U.S. and would remain in isolation.

"Hey, Folks... we're home now and, like the rest of America, we carry on with sheltering in place and social distancing. Many, many thanks to everyone in Australia who looked after us. Their care and guidance made possible our return to the USA. And many thanks to all of you who reached out with well wishes. Rita and I so appreciate it," the statement read.

A day later, Wilson described herself as having recovered from the virus. "I am celebrating the beauty of this life, the blessings God has given, and my continued good health, even now as a COVID-19 survivor."
