Rite Aid to close location near State College as part of bankruptcy restructuring

Rite Aid plans to close one of its locations in Centre County, the company wrote in a bankruptcy document filed Thursday, as the business attempts to restructure while dealing with losses and opioid-related lawsuits.

The business plans to close its location at 1927 S. Atherton St., in the Hills Plaza. It was not clear when or how many people were employed; an email sent to the company was not immediately returned Friday.

It’s one of 17 stores expected to shutter in the business’ second wave of closings, joining a group of more than 150 announced in October. No state is expected to see more stores close than Pennsylvania, which accounts for nearly one-fourth of all closures.

Rite Aid has three other locations in Centre County, two in the Centre Region and one in Bellefonte. The Philadelphia company wrote in its federal bankruptcy filing that it runs more than 2,000 stores, most of which are on the East and West coasts.

The business has posted annual losses for several years and has been cutting costs and stores as it dealt with long-standing financial challenges, the Associated Press reported. It has said it expects a net loss of as much as $680 million in the current fiscal year, which will end next spring.

The company, like its rivals, also faces financial risk from lawsuits over opioid prescriptions. Rite Aid already reached several settlements, including one announced last year with West Virginia for up to $30 million.

Larger competitors like CVS and Walgreens, which run several thousand more locations, have moved aggressively into health care to add other sources of revenue.

Rite Aid’s filing listed $8.6 billion in total debts and $7.6 billion in assets.
