River Hill football bounces back from Week 1 loss, runs past Howard in shutout win | Howard County sports roundup
Sep. 11—What a difference a week can make.
Last Friday, River Hill quarterback Bergen Remick played like he was starting in his first varsity game. The signal caller of the Hawks' Wing-T offense threw three interceptions in a 14-7 loss to Long Reach — only the second Week 1 loss for the perennial powerhouse program in the last 15 years.
But that was last week.
On Friday against Howard, Remick played like a seasoned veteran, orchestrating a River Hill offense that rushed for 355 yards en route to a 16-0 win.
"Last week, I felt like I let my team down," Remick said. "This week, I came out and played my best game, kept the ball safe and did everything I could."
Remick ran for 68 yards on 11 carries, scoring the Hawks' first touchdown on a 1-yard QB sneak. River Hill coach Brian Van Deusen said he was pleased with how Remick and the rest of his team "bounced back" from last week's loss.
"He's a great kid, and he's one of our hardest workers," Van Deusen said about his junior quarterback. "In our offense, you've got to have a quarterback who can do all the stuff. There's so much with the timing, and he's got that down. We know he can run, and he had some big runs to keep drives going today."
Along with Remick, junior running backs Ethan Burnett and Nico Lancashire led the Hawks' ground game by totaling 252 yards on 41 carries. Burnett churned out 153 yards and a touchdown on 25 inside carries, while Lancashire carried the ball 16 times for 99 yards on mostly perimeter runs.
"It felt great to be able to run the ball like River Hill football," Remick said. "I have all the confidence in those guys."
"Nico and Ethan carried the load today," Van Deusen said. "They did a good job of getting extra yards after contact, protecting the ball and finding a way to get first downs."
In practice this week, Van Deusen said he emphasized the importance of starting fast against Howard (1-1), and River Hill (1-1) did just that. Burnett broke away for 57 yards on the second play from scrimmage, and Remick's QB sneak capped off the six-play scoring drive.
"We knew [Howard] was coming off a big win and this is their first home game, so we knew they'd be pumped up," Van Deusen said. "We knew we had to set the tone and score early."
River Hill didn't score again until the fourth quarter. After forcing three straight Howard three-and-outs in the second half, the Hawks sustained two long scoring drives to clinch the victory.
The first was a 12-play, 66-yard drive that ended in a 24-yard field goal from Poojan Patel, and the second was 12 plays and 55 yards, capped off with a 2-yard score from Burnett.
"That's something we talk about and stress in our weight training and lifting during the season to maintain that strength," said Van Deusen, who is in his 22nd season leading the Hawks. "We want to wear the other team out, wear the [defensive] line out, and we were able to do that."
The Hawks' defense was dominant throughout, holding Howard to 108 yards of total offense and 5-of-16 passing. The Lions didn't run a play in River Hill territory until their final drive in the final four minutes.
"The defense was great," Van Deusen said. "We did lose a bunch, too. It takes some time, but we're just looking for that improvement each week. We're really aggressive on defense.
Howard coach Ross Hannon said his team's youth was evident, as the Lions were hampered by penalties on both sides of the ball. But the longtime Howard County coach added that he was proud of his team's effort.
"We're not happy with the score, but I'm not disappointed with our effort," Hannon said. "... We fought all the way until the fourth quarter. We're going to take that and build on it. There's always a little rain before the rainbow."
Both teams are back in action on Sept. 17. River Hill travels to Marriotts Ridge (0-2), while Howard plays at Reservoir (0-2).

—Howard's Ty Gore blocked a field goal in the third quarter.
—Despite Howard's offensive struggles, Lions running back Darrell English was productive with six carries of 8-plus yards. The junior totaled 80 yards on 19 touches.
—River Hill's Daniel Fahmy, one of the top linebackers in the county, forced a fumble in the third quarter that was recovered by Remick.

The Lightning didn't have a let down after its upset win over River Hill last week. Long Reach (2-0) got out to a fast start and never slowed down, leading 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and 35-0 at halftime.
Quarterback Alexander Coffey was on fire in the first half, throwing three passing touchdowns of 20-plus yards to give the Lightning a 21-0 lead. Jaylen Etheridge, who intercepted a pass in the win, kicked off the game's scoring with a 60-yard reception touchdown. Daniel Ribalta then scored on a 30-yard pass from Coffey, and Baxter found the end zone on a 20-yard reception.
Running back Julius Saunders, who scored both of Long Reach's touchdowns in its 14-7 win over River Hill last week, then scored three straight touchdowns, finding the end zone from 15, 58 and 10 yards out.

Kanye Holland's 1-yard rushing touchdown with 2:08 remaining led the Scorpions to the come-from-behind victory over the Wildecats (0-2). Oakland Mills (2-0) came back from down 14-0 at halftime to win the game. John Tatum, Shane King and Holland each ran for touchdowns in the second half. Wilde Lake nearly scored at the end of the game, as the Wildecats completed a pass down to the 1-yard line, but the Scorps stripped the ball and recovered it for a touchback.

The Golden Bears scored a touchdown in all four quarters to earn the convincing win over the Eagles (0-2). Nathaniel Lamb paced Hammond (1-1) on the ground with 198 yards and three touchdown on eight carries. Lamb's touchdowns came from 2, 55 and 95 yards out. Hammond's other touchdown was a 37-yard pass from Jordan Campbell to Nick Thomas. Tavien Bogier and J'Marcus Hines both led the defense with interceptions.
