River Hill softball completes suspended game with big comeback win over Wilde Lake | Howard County sports roundup

May 27—Heading into the bottom of the third inning on Monday against visiting Wilde Lake, River Hill found itself trailing 10-1. Then, as the team began mounting a comeback with a couple runs in the bottom half of the frame, the rains came.

On Wednesday afternoon, in the completion of that suspended contest, the Hawks managed to pick up where they left off.

River Hill (6-3) ended up scoring five times in the third and another four runs in the fourth to tie the game and eventually earned a 16-15 victory in extra innings following several other wild swings of momentum. It wasn't until Abby Shim's walk-off single to left in the bottom of the eighth that the Hawks took their first lead of the game.

Ellie Hasegawa (3-5, double, 4 runs), Kathleen Maiorana (3-5, 2 doubles, SAC, 2 runs) and Sara Emig (4-4, double, homerun, SAC) were the top offensive performers for River Hill, while Ever and Lux Sheplee each delivered two hits apiece.

River Hill scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and then Wilde Lake answered with two runs in the top of the eighth. But it was the Hawks that answered the call starting with a hit from Ever Sheplee followed by Emig's 2-run homerun to again tie the score. Ella Wood singled and stole a base to set up Shim for the game-winning hit.

Wilde Lake had grabbed the lead on Monday behind a three-run home run from Allison McQueeney and a grand slam from Justyce Richard.

Overall, the Wildecats finished with 13 hits, including multiple from McQueeney (3-5), Richard (double, home run) and Morgan Baird.

OUTDOOR TRACK:

The Howard outdoor track and field team didn't waste any time starting fast at the Howard County championships on Wednesday evening.

In between rain/thunder delays at River Hill High School, the Lions won the only two events with final results. Howard, the perennial powerhouse in the county, won both the boys and girls 4x800-meter relays in school-record times.

"What a great start to this meet," said Howard coach Zack Dickerson. "We are hoping to keep that going."

In the first race of the day, Howard's Hayley Long, Kiley Mann, Elizabeth Holcombe and Hannah Schwab combined to finish the 4x800 in a record 9:40 — eight seconds ahead of Glenelg's relay.

"For them to do that to start this meet off gave us a lot of momentum," Dickerson said.

The boys team — consisting of Kendall Phillips, Eian Butler, Robbie Ryerson and Joseph Raudabaugh — followed suit in the next race, finishing in a record 7:56. Raudabaugh battled with Centennial's Antonio Camacho-Bucks for the last 800 meters, outkicking the Eagles' sophomore to give the Lions the gold medal by half a second. The Eagles' time of 7:57 was also a school record.

"It felt very good. That last lap was everything I had," Raudabaugh said. "I just went for it when I was behind him before the last 200. My legs were burning, but I just kept pumping my arms."

No other individual county champions were crowned Wednesday due to inclement weather. The meet started nearly two hours after its scheduled 5 p.m. start time and ended at 8 p.m. Most of the preliminaries — the 100-meter dashes and the 100/110 hurdles — were completed, but the 200-meter preliminary race, the 3,200 run, the 4x200 relay and all six field events weren't finished and will be pushed to Day 2 on Saturday.

The extended second day of the championships on Saturday at River Hill will start at 9 a.m.
