'River of Lava' Spills After Canary Island Volcano's Cone Collapses

Fresh lava flows spilled from an opening in the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma after a wall of the main cone collapsed on October 9.

Large blocks as big as three-story houses were being carried by the lava flow, according to Spain’s Geological and Mining Institute (IGME).

More than 1,186 buildings have been destroyed by the volcano since it began erupting on September 19, according to the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute. Credit: IGME via Storyful
