Riverdale's Lili Reinhart has discussed being "the butt of a joke" amongst TV watchers.

Better known as her high-school alter-ego Betty Cooper, the actress was speaking to Vulture ahead of the supernatural teen drama's last-ever episode this month, pointing out: "I think it's important to acknowledge that our show is made fun of a lot.

"People see clips taken out of context and are like: 'What? I thought this was about teenagers.' And we thought so as well — in season 1."

Reinhart, whose other credits include Hustlers and the Charlie's Angels flop, went on to further reflect: "It's really not been easy to feel that you're the butt of a joke. We all want to be actors; we're passionate about what we do. So when the absurdity of our show became a talking point, it was difficult."

It's widely appreciated within the show's fanbase that Riverdale grew weirder in terms of plotlines over the course of seven seasons, with sorceresses and murderous cults just the tip of the iceberg.

"It is 'What the f**k?'. That's the whole point," added Reinhart. "When we're doing our table reads and something ridiculous happens, [showrunner] Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] is laughing because he understands the absurdity and the campiness."

By the sounds of it, FP Jones actor Skeet Ulrich could've done with a few outlandish storyline twists himself as he candidly confessed in 2020: "I'm leaving Riverdale because I got bored creatively. How's that? That's the most honest answer."

His co-star Madchen Amick, who plays Betty's mum Alice, recently revealed that Ulrich was invited back for the final season but that it never came to fruition: "We have to close the book on that. He was invited back… But then it fell through. I don't know the particulars on it. But he ended up not coming on board. We were sort of hoping that everybody would come through.

"I think [creator] Roberto's [Aguirre-Sacasa] intention was to have everybody back that he could in that last season. There was an episode that was dedicated to [Ulrich's] character, but it didn't happen. So you know, Falice (FJ and Alice) fans are left wanting something that just never happened."

Riverdale airs on The CW in the US and will end with season 7. In the UK, you can stream via Netflix.
