Riverfront Concert Series returns to Eastern Wharf with Black Hat, Mary Margaret Cozart

The Riverfront Concert Series at The Park at Eastern Wharf returns on Thursday with Black Hat and Mary Margaret Cozart.

The concert will start at 6 p.m. with C. Alexander's, Latin Chicks and Rita's Italian Ice providing food trucks. The event is free and open to the public with street parking available. The DOT shuttle also runs until 7 p.m. for anyone being dropped off.

“For April, both Black Hat and Mary Margaret Cozart are newer acts on the Savannah scene with unique sounds, excellent musical pedigrees and much deserved praise," said Kayne Lanahan, Executive Director for Program Management, The Park at Eastern Wharf.

Here's more on Black Hat from a recent feature in DO Savannah:

Black Hat is yet another example of the community spirit in Savannah music scene where most artists play in two or three bands at a time and support each other.

“In one sense it’s the way it absolutely should be,” said Ty Thompson. “Due to COVID and inflation, for better or worse, and it’s mostly worse, it doesn’t make as much sense to tour as it used to, and so a lot of us are stuck more stationary than we otherwise would be. Since we are and we’re all in the same city, it’s really cool to have everyone be supportive of each other. I just think there is a lot of value in so many musicians being here in town. It’s an obvious decision—why not support them if they need some support? As a result you see a lot of us backing up Jalen if he wants to play a show, or backing up Sophie if she’s playing a Fauvely show. That said, I think Black Hat is certainly not trying to combat that, because I’m such a fan of all that.”

Here's more on Mary Margaret Cozart from a recent feature in DO Savannah:

Mary Margaret Cozart wrote and recorded her debut EP, “Emerald City,” during the pandemic. The five songs feature arrangements that are dreamy like Oz’s slumber inducing poppy fields, and guitar phrases that shimmer like the domes of the Emerald City. The songs on the record draw a parallel between her life during quarantine with Dorothy’s experiences in Oz.

“Those five songs are the ones I cherry picked as my favorite that I had written over the course of my life by the time I was 20,” said Cozart. “I got this weird idea to reflect my coming of age realizations during the pandemic and compared it to Dorothy’s finding the Emerald City and finding the facade of what she had been dreaming. Those songs work through different themes I had been dealing with. Specifically, during the pandemic, I wrote a song about my great aunt who had passed in the beginning of COVID, and I had written that with her in mind and felt like it also resonated with the theme of being home during quarantine.”
