Roaches crawling on cutting board earn restaurant a ‘C’ grade: Triangle sanitation scores (9/12)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of Sept. 6-12.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 74 restaurant inspections were completed Sept. 6-12.

All restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows 28 restaurant inspections were completed Sept. 6-12.

Most restaurants received an A grade.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant (3003 Guess Rd. in Durham) received a score of 85.5% during an inspection on Sept. 6.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 18 standards. Of these, five were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included improper methods of thawing pork and excess grease build-up on the side and bottom surface of the Wok station grill unit and the deep fryer unit.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 93% in April 2023 and 97.5% in November 2022.

One restaurant received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

Wang’s Garden (826 Fayetteville St. in Durham) received a score of 79% during an inspection on Sept. 8.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 16 standards. Of these, six were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included finding roaches crawling on flip top cooler’s cutting board,” ants crawling on the floors and equipment throughout the entire kitchen and dead roaches in the walk in freezer.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 83% in June 2023 and 85.5% in March 2023.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows that 20 restaurant inspections were Sept. 6-12.

All restaurants received an A grade.

Johnston County sanitation scores

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 16 restaurant inspections were completed Sept. 6-12.

Most restaurants received an A grade.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Primo Pizza-New York Style (226 E. Main St. in Clayton) received a score of 88% during an inspection on Sept. 7.

  • The restaurant was in violation of nine standards. Of these, five were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included improper handwashing and finding unmarked or improperly marked and dated food items in coolers.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 90% in May 2023 and 97.5% in March 2023.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Chatham County sanitation scores

The Chatham County inspections management system shows that that five restaurant inspections were completed Sept. 6-12.

All restaurants received an A grade.
