Roaches, rodents and raw sewage: 3 Pensacola restaurants shut down in April inspections

Restaurants across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties were showered with inspections throughout the month of April from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, forcing three restaurants to temporarily shut their doors, along with two that received administrative complaints.

There was bright news for some though, as 42 restaurants passed their initial inspection without a single violation.

Three restaurants temporarily close

Bagelheads, 916 E. Gregory St.

Bagelheads received 12 violations during an April 6 visit from the DBPR, including for insect and rodent activity, forcing the restaurant to temporarily shut its doors. The report stated that about 23 rodent droppings were found around the restaurant, including 10 found inside of the bread roller. Rodent nesting materials were also observed underneath a filing cabinet in the office. Insects were also found in various places throughout the kitchen, such as 12 live insects inside the brown sugar bin and three inside the brown sugar rack. In a follow-up inspection the same day, there were still seven remaining violations from the initial inspection. A time extension was given, but a follow-up inspection is still required.

Crab Trap received six violations during an April 3 inspection, leading to the restaurant’s temporary closure. The inspector observed 46 live roaches on the inside mechanical area of the dish machine. Other offenses included an employee eating in a food preparation area and equipment not being properly maintained and dried. The restaurant complied with a follow-up inspection the next day.

In an April 14 visit from the DBPR, Church’s was observed to have raw sewage on the grounds of the establishment flowing to the drive thru area around the menu board and talk box. Time was extended, and the restaurant complied on April 17.
