Road work ahead: ODOT construction projects coming to Wayne, Ashland & Holmes in 2023

Despite the recent snowfall and temperature drop, construction crews are prepping for a booming construction season. The first orange cones have already fallen upon local roadways.

The Ohio Department of Transportation released its 2023 construction guide for Holmes County in District 11 and Wayne and Ashland counties in District 3.

Here's what you need to know for your 2023 commute.

Holmes County ODOT construction projects

A slew of projects are slated for Holmes County this year ranging from bridge replacements to resurfacing and new bike paths, according to ODOT.

Caught in the middle:West Holmes residents want quick end to fire fight with Loudonville

  • The first began on March 15. New sidewalks will be installed along state Route 241 at a cost of $326,648. Traffic will be maintained through the estimated completion date of Aug. 31.

  • Four miles of resurfacing on the Holmes County Trail will begin on April 1 starting just north of Depot in Millersburg to County Road 189 in Holmesville. It will likely end on June 9 and cost $473,716. No traffic slowdowns are expected.

  • State Route 39, state Route 754 in Holmes County and state Route 93 in Tuscarawas County will have culverts replaced at an estimated $1.9 million. This work began March 15. Roads will be closed through Aug. 31.

  • A bridge on Township Road 123 will be replaced and realigned over Doughty Creek starting April 3. The $1.2 million project will restrict lanes and is estimated to end by Oct. 31.

  • Resurfacing will begin on May 1 for U.S. Route 62 west of Killbuck from Township Road 76 to Township Road 24. Lane restrictions will be maintained through Sept. 30 for the $1.4 million project.

  • Four miles of bike paths will be built on the Holmes County Trail from County Road 25 in Glenmont to state Route 520. A bridge on the route will be rehabilitated. The $3.7 million project will start May 1 and is estimated to finish by Nov. 30.

  • New sidewalks will be built along South Washington Street in Millersburg from South Monroe Street to Glen Drive. Starting May 1, the roughly $294,000 project will conclude by Aug. 31 with limited impact to traffic.

  • A culvert will be improved on U.S. Route 62 east of Millersburg starting May 29. The nearly $120,000 project will end by late Sept.

  • Mohican Valley Trail Phase 1 will start Aug. 1, with the construction of a shared use path from the end of the covered bridge near County Road 23 at the Ashland-Holmes County line. The project is $1.6 million and is estimated to finish by Oct 31.

Ashland County ODOT construction projects for 2023

Five state construction projects are scheduled in Ashland County.

  • The first will begin in April and is likely to end in October. It is a U.S. Route 42 slide repair just east of Township Road 101 and is estimated to cost $874,933.

  • Ashland and Richland county roads will be chip sealed to keep the roadways from becoming brittle.

  • The county will see state Route 89 from State Route 95 to the village of Jeromesville's southern corporation limits and from the northern corporation limits of Jeromesville to Congress Street sealed.

  • State Route 439 between Charles Mill Lake Eagle Point Campground to Main Street and state Route 511 from U.S. Route 30 to U.S. Route 42 will also be sealed.

  • State Route 430 in Richland County will be sealed between Reed Road and the campground. Traffic will be maintained at all times during this $1.5 million project, which will run from July to September.

  • New road projects are coming to Wayne County while the multi-year state Route 83 major rehabilitation is slated to end in October. The $30.6 million project will see the right lane in both directions closed starting Monday, March 20 to remove crossover lighting, according to ODOT. The next day, the left lane in both directions will be closed to work on the crossover area of the media wall. This is the start of long-term lane closures along state Route 83 this year.

  • State Route 94 will be resurfaced from Fox Lake Road to just north of Main Street. The $2.3 million project will begin in May and end in October.

  • Starting in May, U.S. Route 250 from West Lebanon Road to Canton Street will be closed for culvert repair. the estimated cost is $462,000.
