Road America's Ariens Art on Wheels Vintage Weekend returns, and more news in weekly dose

SHEBOYGAN - The Ariens Art on Wheels Vintage Weekend, in collaboration with the Vintage Sports Car Driver Association, is set to make its return to Road America Sept. 15-17.

More than 300 restored vintage and historic race cars, spanning 11 racing classes, will grace the iconic Road America track.

A unique highlight of the event is the open-access paddock, inviting spectators to immerse themselves in the world of vintage racing.

For 2023, the event will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Formula Vee. Also, for the 14th year in a row, VSCDA will hold its Cup races. The Kimberly, Sheldon and Elkhart Lake Cup races will take place Sept. 17. These Cup races are based on the original races held on the roads in and around Elkhart Lake from 1950 to 1952.

On Sept. 16, race attendees can enjoy a special Concours d’Elegance at Road America in the Fan Walk area by Victory Lane. A curated selection of vehicles will be displayed from 9 a.m. until the Concours Awards at 3 p.m.

Also on Sept. 16, race fans can participate in Coffee & Canvas. Enjoy a painting class while sipping coffee with Chris Bonk’s Bottle and Bottega. The cost is $40 per person (plus event admission), including coffee and all painting supplies. The class will be in the Paddock Concessions Shelter. Space is limited. If anyone is interested, they can register in advance through the VSCDA website.

The annual Road Course Re-Enactment Sept. 16 is a police-escorted tour of the original Elkhart Lake 1950-1952 public road race course that leaves Road America at 2:45 p.m. Race cars, street cars and motorcycles are invited to participate. VSCDA has been doing this re-enactment for 30 years and often attracts 100-plus vehicles. Register your vehicle to participate for $35 per vehicle (plus event admission) or watch for free from many vantage points in Elkhart Lake.

Road racing history: Elkhart Lake's historic road racing course got a nod from three racing greats in 2006 | Throwback

On-track touring sessions will be offered Sept. 16-17 for street-legal sedans and sportscars (no trucks, SUVs, vans, motorcycles or racecars) for $60 per vehicle each day (plus event admission) with proceeds benefiting Women in Motorsports North America. The mandatory driver’s meeting will start promptly at 11:15 a.m. at the Touring Paddock. Register through VSCDA, or purchase a touring pass at the Registration building inside Gate 6 by 10:45 a.m. each day.

Road America will provide free admission to all active, reserve-duty military and veterans with ID all weekend. Tickets are available, and additional event details, ticket pricing and camping information can be found at roadamerica.com or by calling 800-365-7223. Anyone 16 years old and younger is admitted free with a paying adult at the gate. Racing runs rain or shine.

Eastbound State 23 off-ramp to State 32 to close in Sheboygan County

Wisconsin Department of Transportation has announced a short-term closure of the eastbound State 23 off-ramp to State 32 in Sheboygan County.

WisDOT said maintenance crews will be replacing a culvert pipe and concrete pavement.

The eastbound State 23 to State 32 ramp will be closed beginning at 6 a.m. Sept. 11 through 4 p.m. Sept. 21. For the detour, State 32 traffic should follow State 23 eastbound to County Y northbound to westbound State 32.

Above & Beyond’s ‘Tastefully Childish’ fundraiser is Sept. 15

Sheboygan’s Above & Beyond Children’s Museum, 902 N. Eighth St., will hold its “Tastefully Childish” fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 15.

Tickets are $80 per person or $70 per member with a limited number available. They can be purchased in advance by contacting the museum at 920-458-4263, going to abkids.org or emailing Executive Director Jackie Erdman at jackie@abkids.org for more details.

For this year’s fundraiser, people are encouraged to dress up as their favorite intrepid explorer and a costume contest winner will be named at the end of the evening. The night will include tastings at various food and drink stations with musical entertainment, silent auction offerings, raffles and more.

Plymouth Lions to host 14th annual Football Tailgate Party

Big-screen TVs, snacks, wings, brats, burgers, chili, door prizes and fun will all be part of the annual Plymouth Lions Football Tailgate Party Sept. 17 at Amore banquet hall and Antonio’s Sports Bar & Grille, 18 W. Mill St., Plymouth.

The public is invited to join in the fun with doors opening at 10 a.m. and featuring Green Bay playing Atlanta starting at noon.

Cash prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250 will be given away as the major door prizes with the entrance ticket. Dozens of raffles and silent auction items will also be included.

The game will be shown on Amore’s 100-inch HD projection screen, two 70-inch TVs as well as several other big-screen TVs throughout the building.

Advance tickets are $25 and include door prize drawing, tailgate food and snacks. A cash bar will be available. Tickets at the door are $30 and there is a limit of 400 tickets.

Advance ticket outlets are Bob’s Barber Shop, Plymouth Piggly Wiggly and Antonio’s.

100 Thousand Poets for Change returns Sept. 23

From 10 a.m. until noon Sept. 23, 100 Thousand Poets for Change (100TPC) will hold its 13th annual event on the plaza at Mead Public Library, 710 N. Eighth St., Sheboygan.

100TPC began in 2011 and is a worldwide movement that takes place every year during the last week of September. Its mission is to promote peace, justice and environmental sustainability by celebrating community and raising awareness through the lens of poetry.

This year’s featured poet is Nicholas Gulig, poet laureate of Wisconsin. There will also be opening and closing songs from singer-songwriter Jon Doll.

Scary story contest: Mead Public Library’s scary story contest is back! Students can enter until Oct. 10 for chance to win prizes.

Event organizer and poet laureate of Sheboygan Lisa Vihos said: “Poetry is a universal language that can remind us of our connection to each other as we chart a course for the future. I hope people of all ages will think about how they contribute to making the world a kinder, safer and more peaceful place, and bring a poem to share. If someone just wants to listen, I highly encourage that, too!”

Sheboygan is one of hundreds of cities around the world that will share visions of positive change during the last week of September. Members of the public can share an original poem or a poem by someone else. All are welcome to participate with a maximum of 5 minutes at the mic (including introductory remarks) so everyone gets a turn. In case of rain, the event will move to the library’s Rocca Room.

Mini Golf & Walk fundraiser for Down syndrome set for Sept. 23

DSAW-Sheboygan is hosting a Mini Golf & Walk fundraiser to raise awareness and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome in the community. The event will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at Harbor Pointe Miniature Golf, 322 S. Pier Drive, Sheboygan.

A round of golf is included with registration and there will be kid-friendly activities like a balloon artist. Plus, grab-and-go snacks will be included.

Weill Center brings Countdown to Halloween movie marathon Sept. 30

Sheboygan’s own Weill Center, rumored to have haunts of its own, will host a Countdown to Halloween movie marathon Sept. 30 featuring three classic horror films — “Nightmare On Elm Street,” “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween.”

Movies start at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased online at weillcenter.com or by calling the ticket office at 920-208-3243 between noon and 4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays. The theater is at 826 N. Eighth St.
