Road closures, traffic measures planned as Santa Paula readies for repaving project

Residents can expect parking problems and closed roads when five Santa Paula streets, including Dean Drive, are paved in the coming weeks.

Limited parking for residents began Monday and is expected through July 1, according to a news release. Traffic control and street closures are expected to start July 5 and conclude by the end of August, said city spokeswoman Sydni Overly.

Work will take place on:

  • Santa Barbara Street from Steckel Drive to 7th Street

  • Santa Paula Street from Dean Drive to Highway 150 (Ojai Road)

  • Dean Drive from Main Street to Santa Paula Street

  • Virginia Terrace from Mill Street to Highway 150 (Ojai Road)

  • Saticoy Street from Highway 150 (Ojai Road) to 12th Street

Concrete work, pothole repairs, asphalt paving and other upgrades will occur.

According to a news release, a single-layer micro-surfacing will be overlaid on the streets to extend durability up to 10 years.

The total cost of the program is under $1.5 million. Santa Paula will pay for the program from funds including Measure T, a 1-cent general sales tax measure passed by voters in 2016; and Senate Bill 1 funds from state gas tax and vehicle fees.

The improvements will be completed during the summer to minimize disruption to school traffic, according to the release.

“We understand that these street closures can be inconvenient for our community members, and we appreciate their ongoing cooperation that allows our department to complete these improvement projects in a safe and timely manner,” said Clete Saunier, director of public works.

The City Council approved the work on June 15. On April 2020, council members authorized a contract with J & H Engineering to do the work.
