Road commission incumbent re-elected; radio system bond proposal fails

Tuesday’s mid-term primary election is over.

Unofficial results with 25 of 26 precincts reporting in Hillsdale County determined key issues and races in a pivotal time in Michigan politics after redistricting.

Incumbent Road Commissioner Bob Godfrey carried a commanding lead as results trickled in late Tuesday night beating out two challengers with 3,515 votes.

His challengers, Andy Thomas of Litchfield and Lisa Wallace of Moscow, were able to pull in 1,472 and 1,780 votes respectively.

In the primary race for the 2nd District County Commissioner seat, challenger Steve Lanius took a lead over incumbent Kathy Schmitt and won with 857 votes to Schmitt’s 628.

Mark Wiley, the incumbent for the commissioner’s 3rd District, beat out challenger Kelley Mapes with 757 votes to Mapes’ 437.

And in the commissioner’s 5th District race, Brent Leininger won his bid for re-election over challenger Namrata Carolan. Leininger took 927 votes to Carolan’s 477.

The Hillsdale County 800 MHz radio system project bond proposal failed by almost 1,000 votes with 4,974 residents voting against the proposal.

Voters narrowly passed a proposal to replace the Hillsdale County senior citizens services millage with 4,667 votes in favor and 4,335 nays.

Tuesday’s primary turnout was just over 25-percent of all registered voters with 9,452 voters out of a possible 37,057 casting a ballot in the 25 of the 26 precincts reporting in Hillsdale County.
