Road work is planned at these 30 streets in Corning in 2023
Crews will soon begin work on about $3 million in road upgrades in the City of Corning.
City Manager Mark Ryckman said the road list includes more than 30 streets and alleys on the city’s Northside and Southside.
“We have a significant amount of street paving in this year’s paving program,” Ryckman said. “The cost will be over $83 million and will include several streets, as well as improvements to handicap ramps at various locations.”
Dalrymple Gravel & Contracting, of Elmira, entered the low bid, $3,047,659, Friday to complete the work.
“Several years ago, the City Council began building additional funds into the base of our budget for street paving,” Ryckman said. “These additional funds now total over $1 million and are making a significant impact.”
Brain McCarthy, city assistant superintendent of public works, said city public work crews will pave several alleys this summer.
“We have focused on alley improvements over the past few years, and we are starting to make great progress,” McCarthy said.
Ryckman agreed.
“The paving crews at the Public Works Department always do an excellent job on paving our alleys,” Ryckman said. “They take a lot of pride in their work.”
In 2012, the City Council adopted a $31 million, 14-year street maintenance plan that would increase taxes 2% annually by adding an extra $100,000 to the budget. Ryckman said that extra funding has shown noticeable results.
