Road safety meets fashion in reflective line

Road safety meets fashion

Ukrainian designer Anna Gaiova

debuted her ’Lines of Light’ show

Location: Kyiv, Ukraine

which uses reflective fabrics

// in jacket collars,

buttons,

and cuffs //

to help people stay visible at night

(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) DESIGNER, ANNA GAIOVA, SAYING:

"This outfit is safe to cross the road in and absolutely stunning at the same time. This collection presents cocktail and evening dresses. When it's dark at night and cars are still on the roads, it is not safe. So for example, a woman in an evening dress of my design, who leaves some event and does not use a designated pedestrian crossing to get to her car still won't be hit by any driver."

The collection features 12 outfits

and Anna hopes to shatter stereotypes

that reflective material should only be used

for sports and workwear

(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) DESIGNER, ANNA GAIOVA, SAYING:

"I would also like to create several men's outfits as so far I have only focused on women's clothing. But reflective clothing is also really useful for men. Not everyone likes the sports style. Not everyone wants to put on an orange vest over a suit. If, for example, the inner side of a jacket collar had a reflective element,

then at night, if a man needed to get out of his car to find something in the trunk, he could just turn up the collar to become visible on the road."
