Not often does one get the chance to make a difference when everyone is watching.

Levi Vanschuyver stepped into that role Tuesday night — and delivered with daunting aplomb.

The Copan High basketball stalwart calmly sunk two free throws in the final seconds to lift the Hornets past South Coffeyville High, 45-55, in boys basketball action.

Vanschuyver capped a double-double effort (13 points, 13 rebounds) in Copan’s first win since the Christmas break.

Shooter Brewington added eight points, followed by Weston O’Rourke with seven and Kane Foreman with and Karson Woodworth with five each.

First year Copan head coach Kolton Stacy welcomed his team’s effort, following a rough showing at a Christmas break scrimmage.

“It was big to go on the road,” he said about Tuesday’s effort. “South Coffeyville is a tough place to play. They packed it out for Senior Night.”

Copan trailed by one point going into the final 30 seconds and had a one-and-one free throw opportunity. The first free throw missed and a South Coffeyville player got to the ball first, but Copan trapped him.

During the frantic fray, an official called a technical foul on a South Coffeyville player, which gave Vanschuyver his free throw opportunity, Stacy said.

Copan improved to 5-6 and won for the first time since Dec. 16.

Next up, Copan is slated to play Friday at Olive.

LADY HORNETS

It was a long night for the Copan girls against their South Coffeyville counterparts.

South Coffeyville won, 58-14, against the short-handed Lady Hornets.

Copan head coach Kristy Bryan praised the ability of South Coffeyville’s Ann Dolan, “who is the best player I’ve seen in Northeastern Oklahoma in a long time. She can create her own shot and drive pretty much at will.”

Copan will focus on a stronger outing Friday at Olive, even though the lineup number is still uncertain.
