Roads Washed Out by Storm Flooding in Maine's Penobscot County

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office warned motorists not to attempt to drive through flooded areas in Maine on Friday, December 23, as several roadways were washed out during heavy rain.

The sheriff’s office said its deputies were responding to “several flooded roadways, traffic crashes and utility issues” across Penobscot County on Friday evening, including a washed-out road in Dixmont, flooding in Etna, a crash on a flooded roadway in Plymouth, and a group of turkeys scared out of the woods and onto a road by falling trees.

The flooding was caused by heavy rain from a storm that also brought coastal flooding and frigid temperatures, and downed trees and power lines across Maine, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

In Bangor, the Penobscot River crested at 12.27 feet, prompting flood warnings. The Maine Emergency Management Agency opened a regional emergency shelter in Standish for those affected by the storm. Credit: Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
