Robert Downey Jr stars in teaser for new HBO spy drama

Max has released a teaser for upcoming series The Sympathizer, a spy drama starring Robert Downey Jr and Sandra Oh.
An adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, the miniseries features Cowboy Bebop's Hoa Xuande as protagonist the Captain, a North Vietnam mole infiltrating the South Vietnam army and ultimately fleeing to the US near the end of the war.
From there, the Captain continues reporting to the Viet Cong but his loyalty shifts when he settles into the American way of life and is manipulated by Downey Jr's CIA agent character.

In the action-packed clip, having a secret identity risks taking a toll on the protagonist as he feels the pressure to maintain his cover and not botch his job whilst getting comfortable in his new life.
"What are you concealing?" Oh's character Ms Sofia Mori asks the Captain in one scene of the teaser, having sensed there's more to him than meets the eye.
"Confessing secrets is the most exciting thing in the world!" she then exclaims in delight when he tentatively says he may have "something to confess".

It isn't clear whether the Captain ultimately confides in Sofia, but it seems that the two of them soon begin an affair that could upend his double agent duties.
Set to premiere in April, the series is co-created by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden) and Don McKellar, with Park also directing.
Alongside Xuande, Oh and Downey Jr (who plays multiples antagonists), The Sympathizer also stars Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Vy Le, and Ky Duyen.
The Sympathizer will begin streaming on MAX on April 14.
