Robert Mueller was put in a completely unwinnable situation: Readers sound off

Readers react to former special counsel Robert Mueller's testimony Wednesday before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees.

Letters to the editor:

It appeared that former special counsel Robert Mueller was having a senior moment for the entire day of his testimony before Congress. Regardless of your political affiliation, how could you not be embarrassed for him as his thoughts seemed muddled and he appeared to have little memory or knowledge of his report or of the facts surrounding his investigation? This is a very sad way for a man to end a long career in public service.

Mueller was put in a completely unwinnable situation and was made to be a pawn in a very sick game that has been going on in government and in almost every aspect of our lives. Partisan politics is destroying everything decent and good in our nation. It is an insatiable monster that will destroy us if we don't do something about it soon.

How much more ugly and tawdry, destructive and divisive, can these investigations and infighting between political parties and citizens become? And how much more can social media and 24-hour news feeds fan the flames of this tribalism that has consumed our culture today?

Mueller has testified, finally. Mueller said that when Donald Trump is no longer president, the Office of Legal Counsel guidelines, which prevent a sitting president from being federally charged, would not apply. This means Trump could well be indicted. The time limit for such a possible charge would have to be established. Ironically, our anti-immigration leader might have to become more concerned with running out the clock on his presidency than he does running asylum seekers out of America. To put it another way, he may spend more energy concentrating on the statute of limitations than on the Statue of Liberty.

Impeachment ready: Robert Mueller testimony on Trump and Russia: Devastating facts that point to impeachment

Mueller again remained true and kept his head amid rapid-fire questions during both hearings on Wednesday. The Republicans did not sway him from any part of his report. Meanwhile, the Democrats, again, did a good job in emphasizing Trump's unfitness to be president. The Democrats did not grandstand: They put country above self, and they did not play to have a personal "Perry Mason" moment.

After watching Mueller's opening day testimony at the hearings, I'd give it a half-star rating. Mueller came off as a doddering, old fool, unsure of his replies. It was just plain disastrous. The Democrats had better get off this collusion and obstruction train before this whole plan to kick out Trump derails, letting far more issues fade away.

I must agree, though, that this president is certifiably guilty on several counts and should be held accountable. I do believe in miracles: I believe that in the long run, justice will prevail.

Republicans reiterated all their Mueller report conspiracy theories, trying to build a case against its outcome. Wednesday marks the day that Democrats have to move forward in a full sweep, bringing the evidence first and foremost to overshadow this TV reality show of a deeply tainted administration.

The Mueller report, released this spring, was supposed to be the end. It ran its due course, unobstructed. It appears the whole investigation was politically motivated in the first place.

Hopefully, liberals will now see that there is nothing on Trump and move on to running this great country!

It was a GOP disaster. Trump wasn't exonerated. Why is the Republican Party trying to make Mueller out as a liar?

A man like Mueller was taken back by the unprofessional and juvenile behavior from Republicans.

Today's talker: Robert Mueller's testimony will now be about marketing, not facts

Even the pundits are calling it a loss for Democrats. It wasn’t supposed to be a show. It was factual and a horrible day for Trump and our country.

@ZeliffDee

Unfortunately, all the public (and the Democrats) were looking for was a televised “gotcha” moment. Another opportunity seems to have been squandered.
