Robert Rodriguez to screen early version of 'Hypnotic,' shot in Austin with Ben Affleck, at SXSW

Add another big movie to the 2023 SXSW Film & TV Festival lineup. Robert Rodriguez will present a work-in-progress version of "Hypnotic" during the festival, SXSW announced Wednesday.

The early cut of the filmmaker's upcoming thriller, filmed in Austin, will screen at 6:30 p.m. March 12 at the Paramount Theatre. "Hypnotic" stars Ben Affleck as "a detective who becomes entangled in a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program while investigating a string of reality-bending crimes," according to the official description.

Deadline in 2021 reported that production was set to begin on “Hypnotic” after a pandemic delay. Subsequently, sightings of Affleck were whispered all over town.

Director Rodriguez also co-wrote the script and served as co-cinematographer and editor. His son, Rebel Rodriguez, is credited with music on "Hypnotic." According to Austin Film Commission, the film was produced by Solstice and Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios. Along with Affleck, the cast includes Alice Braga, JD Pardo, Hala Finley, Dayo Okeniyi, Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley and William Fichtner.

An official release date has not been announced, but "Hypnotic" is expected to hit theaters this year.
