HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER – Salem High School

COLLEGE – I received my bachelor's degree from Ohio State University and my master's degree from Youngstown State University.

FAMILY – My husband, Bob, is a teacher with West Branch Local Schools. My older son, Connor, is a junior at University of Mount Union. My younger son, Caden, works for the city of Alliance. My daughter, Carter, is a junior at West Branch High School.

NOMINATION – “Mrs. Shepherd goes above and beyond in and outside of the classroom. She is a dedicated teacher who makes each child feel equally important and creates the desire to learn!”

WHAT SUBJECTS DO YOU TEACH? – I teach all subjects in first grade.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? – The best part of my job is watching the growth of my students with reading. They enter my classroom as early readers, and I get to watch them develop into fluent readers.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB? – The most challenging part of my job is keeping up with all of the changes in education such as professional development, curriculum and testing.

WHAT SECRET TO SUCCESS WOULD YOU SHARE WITH STUDENTS? – I encourage my first graders to always do their best and to never give up.

IS TEACHING KIDS THE SAME TODAY AS WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED? – Teaching today is greatly different than when I first started. Paperwork for teachers has increased immensely due to state testing, student documentation and data collection.

YOUR STUDENTS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT YOU … – I am a homebody. I prefer to stay at home when I'm not at school.

WHAT IS YOUR HIDDEN TALENT? – I like to bake.

IF YOU WEREN’T A TEACHER, YOU’D BE … – … a veterinarian.

AFTER A LONG DAY AT WORK, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO RELAX? – The best way for me to relax is to spend time with my family, read, and watch Netflix.
