ADRIAN — Adrian College’s Robinson Planetarium has started its schedule of public shows in August.

The planetarium, which is at the eastern end of Peele Hall on the corner of Charles and Williams streets, is showing astronomy programs each Friday in August. Upcoming shows are scheduled for Aug. 12, 19 and 26, each one starting at 7 p.m., a news release from Adrian College said.

Live star talks will be conducted during each 45-minute show, the release said. All programs are offered at no cost and are open to the general public.

The shows each Friday are “Star Talk: The Summer Skies” and “Earth, Moon and Sun.”

“The summer constellations are high in the sky with brightly shining constellations such as Scorpius and Sagittarius," the release said. "The Summer Triangle, which encompasses three constellations, is also a prominent feature in the sky during the summer.”

“Earth, Moon and Sun” is a fulldome show that explores the relationship between the Earth, moon and sun with the help of Coyote, an “amusing” character adapted from Native American oral traditions. The show is appropriate for families and elementary school children.

“Native American stories are used throughout the show to help distinguish between myths and science,” the release said. “Learn why the sun rises and sets and the basics of fusion and solar energy. Examine the moon’s orbit, craters, phases and eclipses.”

Discussions will also  include the launch in late August of the new NASA moon human launch vehicle. The Artemis program is a human spaceflight program to explore the moon, with the goal of touching down on the lunar south pole by 2024. If successful, the Artemis program will perform the first crewed lunar landing mission since Apollo 17 in December 1972.
