For the first time in South Korea, a robot will conduct an orchestra show.
About the robot: The android robot, known as EveR 6, was developed by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology approximately a year ago. Capable of emotional expressions, the robot is modeled after the human body, with a neck and arms that can rapidly change positions. This allows the android to accurately meet the required speed and movement of a human conductor.
EveR 6 uses sensor attachments and motion capture technology to learn a conductor’s baton trajectory.
About the Orchestra: Revealed on Thursday, EveR 6 will conduct “Absence” at the Seoul Haeorum Grand Theater. The show will be held by the National Orchestra of Korea and is expected to take place on June 30. EveR 6 will be joined by human conductor Choi Soo-yeol. Each conductor will perform solo stages, which will be followed by a collaborative performance by both Choi and EveR 6.

“The most challenging aspect for robots is real-time interaction and communication, particularly in the context of music,” Choi told Yonhap News. “In my upcoming performance, I will showcase how human conductors stand out from robots through my leadership skills and ability to interpret music.”
While EveR 6 is South Korea’s first robot conductor, robot conductors have been on the rise in orchestral performances around the globe. These robot conductors include the 2008 Asimo by Honda, the 2017 Yumi in Switzerland, the 2018 second-generation AI robot Alter 2 in Japan and the 2020 third-generation robot Alter 3.
