Robots At This Dallas Restaurant Will Serve You Food...And Sing You Happy Birthday

With the labor shortages hitting the hospitality industry, restaurants have gotten really creative when it comes to getting employees to come work for them. Some offer higher pay, others bring in incentives like bonuses. But a restaurant in Texas is renting robots to make up for the lack of staff.

La Duni, a Latin American restaurant in Texas, “hired” robots to serve and welcome guests. Imagine this: Coqueta, the host assistant, helps you to your table. Alexcita, the beverage runner, brings you your bottle of beer. And Panchita, the food runner, delivers all your apps to the table. These are the names of the three robots Espartaco Borga, owner of La Duni, rents for $15 a day from the company Robotech.

The robots haven’t taken any jobs from employees, but instead made up for the gap in labor. And they are surprisingly human-like. They can laugh, and they can also sing “Happy Birthday” to you. They also take a lot less time to train, only requiring a 90-minute setup.

"They mapped the restaurant, and they assigned the tables numbers within 45 minutes," Borga told CNN. "After a day, the girl at the expo line was in love with this because her arm didn't hurt after carrying 60 trays in a day."

And it’s a win-win for employees of the restaurant too. Borga said that with the money he saves from having the robots, he can pay his employees more for working fewer hours. So who knows? Maybe the next time you go out for your birthday, instead of a gaggle of servers, it’ll be a little robot named Panchita singing you “Happy Birthday.”
