WORCESTER — Robyn K. Kennedy has stepped down from her role as chief operating officer for the YWCA of Central Massachusetts to focus full-time on her campaign for state Senate.

In a Twitter post last week, Kennedy said her final day of work at the YWCA was last Friday.

Kennedy is running as a Democrat to succeed state Sen. Harriette L. Chandler of Worcester, also a Democrat. She is facing Worcester Mayor Joseph M. Petty in the Democratic primary.

Kennedy said in her announcement that she intends to focus her full attention on the Senate campaign.

"I will be dedicating all my time and energy to my campaign for the 1st Worcester State Senate seat," she said. "The voters and the constituents of the 1st Worcester District deserve nothing less."

In addition, Kennedy said she will bring attention to issues affecting the community that she saw every day at the YWCA, such as investing in early education and care educators, affordable housing access for unaccompanied woman and supporting survivors of domestic violence.

Kennedy has worked for the YWCA since 2017, following working in multiple roles within state government.

Kennedy's public sector roles included working in the offices of Gov. Deval L. Patrick, Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray and for the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services as deputy assistant secretary for children, youth and families.     

Last month's financial reports to the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance, showed that Petty maintains a significant cash lead over Kennedy going into the final two full months of campaigning.

Petty's campaign committee reported $76,727 on hand, while Kennedy's campaign reported $22,112.

The Democratic primary will be held oSept. 6.

No Republicans have filed to run for the open seat.

Lisa Mair of Berlin will appear on the general election ballot as an unenrolled candidate.

The 1st Worcester District covers West Boylston, Boylston, Northborough, Berlin, Bolton and part of Worcester.
