Rochester airport one of the best small airports in the country in recent poll. Here's why

The Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport ranked 10th in a recent USA Today poll of the best small airports in the nation.

Specifically, the poll ranked small airports "to help you avoid stress and crowds" and excel with their commercial flight offerings, easy access and amenities, which for many can eliminate some of the headaches regarding travel.

The listicle noted that, Rochester's airport is the "perfect jumping off point." for a western or central New York vacation. "The complex features a solar canopy over the skyway, equipped with solar panels, as well as an improved security checkpoint that can accommodate more passengers," USA Today wrote in the listicle.

Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan topped the list. One other airport from the Empire State was also included on the list - Long Island MacAurthur Airport in Ronkonoma - was fifth on the list. The airport, which is about 45 miles east of New York City, is in Suffolk County.

"While we continuously advocate and work with the airlines to add more nonstop flights, it’s also rewarding to know that a panel of industry experts have recognized our ongoing commitment to improving the passenger experience here at ROC," said Andy Moore, director of the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport.

Nominees for the awards are submitted by a panel of experts and narrowed to 10 by USA Today 10Best editors. The order of the top 10 is determined by readers, according to USA Today.
