Rochester police: Woman hit by car in critical condition. Driver still sought.

ROCHESTER — Police have learned the identity of the woman pedestrian who was struck by a car Friday night, but are still hoping the public can help them identify the driver.

Rochester police Capt. Andrew Swanberry said the woman remained in critical condition Monday at Portsmouth Regional Hospital and police were not yet releasing her name.

"We are working with the family," he said.

The woman was found on the north side of Milton Road at about 10:22 p.m. after the accident was reported. Swanberry said they believe the car may have sustained damage on the passenger side, possibly to the hood, windshield, or the headlights. The woman was reportedly pushing a baby stroller when she was hit.

"There was not a baby inside," said Swanberry. "She seemed to be using it as a cart of sorts. It was not empty."

When emergency crews arrived, the woman was unconscious with a head injury.

"One thing we can say is that she was walking on the wrong side of the road," Swanberry said. "She was walking with traffic, not facing it. It was dark, and she could not see the car coming up on her. People walking along roadways should always walk facing traffic."

The woman was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital by Frisbie Memorial Hospital EMS. She was wearing a purple shirt, blue sweatshirt, white pants and black shoes, according to police.
