Rochester teacher killed in crash on the way to work

A Rochester City School District teacher died in a one-car crash Thursday morning as she drove to work.

Judith A. Purdy, 58, of Le Roy, Genesee County, was driving north on Route 19 when a deer entered the roadway from the east just after 7 a.m., according to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office. The sedan Purdy was driving struck the deer.

Purdy was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

Rochester City School District officials said that Purdy was a teacher at the district for more than 20 years, most recently at Abraham Lincoln School No. 22., 595 Upper Falls Blvd., Rochester.

"She was kind and caring, and her students and colleagues loved her dearly," the statement read. "Her contributions to our district will have a long-lasting impact, and she will be incredibly missed."

Grief counselors will be available to students at staff Thursday. Additional resources are available for families at www.RCSDK12.org/studentsupport.
