Why does Rochester celebrate Juneteenth?

The Juneteenth holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved Africans that the Civil War had ended and slavery had been abolished two years prior.

"Juneteenth was the day the government and institutions enforced its promise," Rochester Area Community Foundation President & CEO Simeon Banister said. "This is what this festival is about"

19th Ward Community Association President Josie McClary said Juneteenth is about more than observing the past.

"It's an opportunity to celebrate the progress we have made."
