EARLIER UPDATE: Fire crews are gaining control of a massive fire in Rock Island that started around 6 p.m. Saturday. It’s the Rock Island Livestock Auction facility off of 34th Avenue near the Rock River.

This fire burned intensely and nothing is expected to be salvageable. Fire crews from Rock Island, Moline, Davenport and some other departments were on scene.

There were some cattle on site – a firefighter told Our Quad Cities News many of them were loose and roaming the area.

The hay at the facility was a major factor in how quickly this fire grew massively.

Fire crews were using every hydrant in the area to get water on the fire.

There are no reports of any injuries so far.

Fire crews remain on the scene as of 10 p.m. At this point, it’s too early to know what caused the fire.

Our Quad Cities News is at the scene in the 500 block of 34th Avenue, where crews are battling a blaze at the former Rock Island Livestock Auction barn.

A firefighter told Our Quad Cities News that cattle were on site and that some are likely running loose. Hay, as you might expect, was providing a strong accelerant to the fire.

Smoke can be seen from across the Quad Cities and is even showing up on radar.
