Rock 'n' Roll Arizona marathon 2022 guide: What runners, fans and motorists need to know

The Rock 'n' Roll marathon returns to metro Phoenix Jan. 15-16, bringing thousands of walkers, joggers and runners to the streets over the weekend.

Rock 'n' Roll Arizona will kick off at the Mill Avenue Bridge on Saturday with a 5K race that begins at 8 a.m.

Sunday brings the marathon, half-marathon and 10K, which start at University Drive and College Avenue in Tempe. The marathon and half-marathon take off at 7:50 a.m., and the 10K begins at 7:20 a.m.

The routes will wind from Tempe through Phoenix and Scottsdale, and local musicians will keep everyone entertained along the way.

The time limits for the races are as follows:

  • Marathon: seven hours.

  • Half-marathon: four hours.

  • 10K: two hours.

  • 5K: one hour.

Registration prices are as follows:

  • 5K: $49.

  • 10K: $59.

  • Half-marathon: $119.

  • Marathon: $129.

When the race starts, participants will be released in waves depending on their assigned corrals.

Start, finish lines for Rock 'n' Roll races

The start line for the 10K, half-marathon and marathon is at University Drive and College Avenue in Tempe. The 5K race starts at the Mill Avenue Bridge (northbound).

The finish line for the marathon and 10K race is at the Mill Avenue Bridge (northbound). The half-marathon and 5K race end at the Mill Avenue Bridge (southbound).

Rock 'n' Roll Marathon road closures

Most closures in Tempe will last from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. After the final participant passes the finish line, streets will start reopening on a rolling basis.

Mill Avenue from Curry Road to Rio Salado Parkway will be closed going southbound beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, and the entire road will be closed to traffic from 4 a.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Sunday.

Mill Avenue also will be closed from Washington Street to Rio Salado Parkway from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Some roads will be closed in one direction only for a period of time. The following streets will be closed in their entirety during the following times:

Saturday, Jan. 15:

  • College Avenue from Curry Road to GIlbert Drive: 7-9 a.m. Saturday.

  • Lake View Drive from Curry Road to Washington Drive: 7-10 a.m. Saturday.

Sunday, Jan. 16:

  • University Drive between Mill Avenue and Rural Road: 3-10 a.m.

  • University Drive between Rural Road and McClintock Drive: 6:30-10 a.m.

  • 48th Street between Indian School Road and Osborn Road: 6:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

  • Van Buren Street between 48th Street and Mill Avenue: 6:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m.

  • Priest Drive between Van Buren Street and Center Parkway: 6:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

  • Center Parkway between Priest Drive and Mill Avenue: 6:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

  • Van Buren Street between Galvin Parkway/Priest Drive and Curry Road: 6:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

  • Curry Road between College and Mill avenues: 6:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

  • Lake View Drive between Washington Street and Curry Road: 6:30-10:45 a.m.

  • McDowell Road between 54th and 64th streets: 6:30-11 a.m.

  • 74th Street between McDowell Road and Enterprise Drive: 6:30-11:15 a.m.

  • SkySong Boulevard from 74th Street to Innovation Place: 6:30-11:15 a.m.

  • Innovation Place from SkySong Boulevard to McDowell Road: 6:30-11:15 a.m.

Rock 'n' Roll Arizona parking

Free parking is available for participants and observers.

For the 5K, parking is available at Sun Devil Football Stadium, 500 E. Veterans Way, Tempe. The drop-off location is Fifth Street and Farmer Avenue.

Several parking lots are available for the Sunday races:

  • ASU Lot 59: Packard Drive and Rio Salado Parkway.

  • ASU Lot 20: Mill Avenue and 10th Street.

  • ASU Lot 55 (must park before 7:30 a.m.): University Drive and Athletes Place.

After the race

Racers can meet up with family and friends at the Finish Line Festival on Sunday. Organizers advise planning a meeting point, as the area might get crowded.

The family reunion area at Tempe Beach Park will have signs next to the stage and beer garden, and participants can meet their guests at the sign for the first letter of their name.

Rock Lobster will cover '80s and '90s music at 8:30 a.m., and country rockers Mogollon will take the stage at 11:45 a.m.
