The performer category includes artists “who have created music whose originality, impact, and influence has changed the course of rock & roll,” according to Hall of Fame officials. This year’s inductees in this category are Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliot, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners.

Crow, Elliot, Michael and Nelson were all on the ballot for the first time this year. This was also Elliot’s first year of eligibility.

DJ Kool Herc and guitarist Linky Wray will be inducted with the Musical Influence Award category. The category recognizes artists whose music and performance style “directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting youth culture.”

Singer Chaka Khan, instrumentalist-producer Al Kooper and lyricist Bernie Taupin will be inducted in the Musical Excellence Award category. Officials note that the recognition in this category is given to “artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music.”

The final category, the Ahmet Ertegun Award, honors a non-performer industry professional that has had a “major influence on the creative development and growth of rock & roll and music that has impacted youth culture.” “Soul Train” TV host Don Cornelius has been selected as the 2023 recipient of that award.

The 38th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Friday, Nov. 3 at Barclays Center in Brooklynn, New York. Officials noted the ceremony will return to Cleveland in 2024.
