Rockford-area Mexican restaurant closes after nearly 30 years

Alvarez Restaurant, a long-time Mexican eatery just east of CherryVale Mall, has permanently closed.

The restaurant, nearly a 30-year fixture at 1600 S. Bell School Road, made the announcement via a Facebook post:

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce Alvarez Restaurant is closing its doors after 28 years in business. Our last day open will be March 25th. After long consideration, we have decided to focus on other endeavors. We thank all of our amigos for the years you have supported us, and we hope to see you all again in the future. Building will still be open for Saturday night dances."

Calls to the restaurant were not returned.
