Rockford approves bus facility expansion

Rockford City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Rockford Mass Transit District for a state funded $32 million expansion of the downtown bus depot.

Rockford will hand over part of Mulberry Street and Lot 13 and its 155 spaces for the project at 520 Mulberry St.

Officials said the expansion is needed to accommodate current and future fixed route vehicle storage and to integrate battery electric charging infrastructure into the downtown facility.

Klehm Arboretum closing for one week

A popular outdoor destination in Rockford will temporarily be closed for one week starting Tuesday.

Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden will be closed Sept. 19 through Sept. 26 for the repaving of paths throughout the grounds and gardens.

More than one mile of path will be repaved along with other improvement projects, according to a news release.

The grounds will reopen Sept. 26.

Celebrating Voter Registration Day

In honor of National Voter Registration Day, members of the League of Women Voters of Greater Rockford will be at Roosevelt Community Education Center, 978 Haskell Ave., Rockford, between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to register young people to vote.

This event is not open to the public. The League of Women Voters of Greater Rockford recently launched GoVote 815 along with a group of local non-profits to help increase voter participation.

A new voting law goes into effect Jan. 1, 2024, allowing 16-year-olds to preregister to vote online in Illinois.
