Comptroller keynote speaker in Rockford

Illinois State Comptroller Suzanna Mendoza will be the keynote speaker Tuesday at a fundraiser event for Winnebago County Citizens for Choice.

The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 4848 Turner St., in Rockford.

"We are honored to have Suzanna Mendoza as our keynote speaker at this year's fundraiser," Barb Giolitto, president of Winnebago County Citizens for Choice said in a news release. "This event serves as a significant opportunity to raise awareness and vital funds to support reproductive rights and healthcare access in our community."

Candlelight vigil to honor survivors

Rockford Sexual Assault Counseling will hold its fourth annual candlelight vigil, Dispelling the Darkness, Tuesday in honor of survivors.

Local survivors will share stories as candles are lit. Candle sales will help fund counseling, legal advocacy, medical advocacy, a 24-hour crisis line, prevention education and professional training. The event also works to raise community awareness of sexual assault and abuse.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Rock Valley College Starlight Theater, 3301 N. Mulford Road, in Rockford. Participants can attend in person or virtually on the Rockford Sexual Assault Counseling Facebook page.

VFW celebrates 100 years

Freeport's Moseley Loewe Post 998 will celebrate 100 years of service with a ceremony and celebration Tuesday night.

The event will start with a social hour and display viewing from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Freeport High School's ROTC unit will conduct the presentation of the colors. Commander Harlow Pues will open the ceremony.

Those present will hold a moment of silence for missing comrades and those who lost their lives in 9/11. Dinner will be followed by more speakers.
