Rockford man killed after three-county police pursuit ends in a crash
More information was released Monday regarding a high-speed chase over the weekend allegedly stemming from a fatal shooting in Rockford and ending in a fatal crash in DeKalb County.
About 12:25 p.m. Saturday, Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputies were in the area of Springfield Avenueand West State Street in response to a shooting that took place at the Auburn Manor apartments at Auburn Street and Johnston Avenue.
Information was broadcast over the police radio that the suspect vehicle in the shooting incident was a black Chevy Impala occupied by two people. A Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputy got behind a black Chevy Impala that matched the description of the suspect vehicle on Springfield Avenue, south of West State Street.
The car, which was occupied by two people, sped off, according to the sheriff's office. Authorities said they tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued to drive westbound on U.S. 20.
The suspect vehicle exited U.S. 20 onto 11th Street to go southbound. The pursuit continued south on 11th Street through Ogle County before the suspect vehicle eventually turned to travel eastbound on Twombly Road.
Shortly after passing West County Line Road and entering DeKalb County, the roadway turned into gravel and the driver of the Impala lost control and crashed into a field on the south side of the roadway.
The driver of the vehicle, 33-year-old Bradley Hale, was arrested at the scene. He was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and is being held in the DeKalb County Jail.
The passenger of the fleeing vehicle, Edward Roland Hall, 57, of Rockford, was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the pursuit, the deputies learned that the shooting victim, David Austin, 22, had died. Dushawn Stallworth, 22, of Chicago, was arrested Saturday night in Rockford on first-degree murder charges in connection with the Auburn Manor shooting.
The Illinois State Police and the DeKalb County Coroner’s and sheriff’s offices are investigating the DeKalb County crash.
