Rockford Register Star transitioning to postal delivery

Starting Feb. 26, the U.S. Postal Service will begin delivering the Rockford Register Star to optimize resources amidst increasing digital readership demand.

The round-the-clock online news cycle has made digital products the first choice for breaking-news, and print subscribers are increasingly engaging digitally. As such, the Rockford Register Star will be putting renewed emphasis on the printed newspaper as a place readers can dive into local news with more impact and context, feel-good community features, sports analysis and commentary — the stories you can’t get anywhere else.

"This change allows the Register Star's staff to best serve all of our readers, whether those readers are getting their news from our website at rrstar.com, our print newspaper or our eNewspaper," said Corina Curry, news director for the Rockford Register Star. "The delivery time of the newspaper is changing, but our commitment to covering the stories that matter most to our community remains the same.

"Our news team has more than 100 years of combined reporting experience in Rockford," she continued. "With that kind of experience comes a duty to make sure our community has access to strong local journalism and local news of all kinds on all of our platforms."

Like many other newspaper publishers, Gannett Co. Inc., which operates more than 200 daily local newspapers, including the Rockford Register Star, has already successfully introduced the approach in dozens of markets across the country, and is expanding the initiative.

The transition ensures print subscribers enjoy timely, consistent deliveries six days a week.

“For many years now, the printed newspaper has served as a culmination of the stories that will become our collective history, while our websites and mobile apps deliver the news of the day,” said Michael A. Anastasi, vice president of Local News for Gannett. “We know that by the time our informed readers pick up the paper, they know what happened yesterday — the print newspaper should provide additional context, to help readers better understand their community and the world around them.”

Readers can visit rrstar.com as well to access the eNewspaper, a digital replica of the print newspaper, at rrstar.com/enewspaper.

Subscribers will receive letters in the mail before the delivery change is implemented. The notifications will also include instructions on accessing digital products.
