Rockport-Fulton Middle School teacher on administrative leave after using racial slur

A teacher at Rockport-Fulton Middle School has been placed on administrative leave after using inappropriate language, including a racial slur, with a group of students Thursday.

"This is not who we are, and we do not condone the language that was used," Aransas County ISD said in a release. "Her language is also no reflection on the rest of our devoted Middle School staff. We want to assure parents and the community that such conduct will not be tolerated."

Videos on Facebook show the teacher saying the N-word with students. In one of the videos, she said calling someone the N-word is the same as calling someone a "b----."

In a statement Friday, Jeremy Coleman, president of the NAACP Corpus Christi chapter, said the organization demands an immediate formal apology to students, parents, "African American" families and the ACISD school board from the teacher.

"We firmly believe that ACISD will work with students and staff on the obscene and disgusting use of such words and their negative historical content," Coleman said in the statement. "Students and staff should understand the impact of such words ... are directly connected with a specific time in our nation’s history - Slavery."

A Facebook post from a parent said her daughter was having lunch in the teacher's classroom with other students. The post said a conversation about Martin Luther King Jr. resulted in the teacher asking a Black student why the N-word was offensive to her.

"This went on and on while the young girl eloquently defended her beliefs and heritage to her teacher," the post said.

The teacher is on leave "pending further employment action," according to the release from the district.
