Rocks thrown at fire trucks while firefighters put out Greenwood blaze Monday

An unknown suspect or suspects threw rocks at fire trucks as firefighters fought a blaze in Greenwood Monday night, damaging several of the trucks.

The Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company responded to blaze at 12655 First St. around 8 p.m., according to a Facebook post. The address is that of New Process Fibre Company, which manufactures Teflon, nylon, plastic and other non-metallic components, according to the company website. The Office of the State Fire Marshal said in a news release the building that caught fire was an "unoccupied maintenance structure."

There were no reported injuries. Damage is estimated at $100,000. The state fire marshal is investigating the fire's origin and cause, and anyone with information should call 302-856-5600.

In addition to Greenwood, numerous other fire departments assisted in putting out the blaze, including Ellendale, Bridgeville, Seaford, Blades and Federalsburg, Maryland.

According to a Facebook post from the Ellendale Fire Company, two of their trucks "were damaged by individuals throwing rocks at the responding apparatus in the area of Market Street and the Greenwood Post Office."

Three other fire departments' vehicles were struck by rocks as well, the post said.
