Rockslide closes US 82 leading to school cancellations

A rockslide overnight on Wednesday, Aug. 23 closed portions of U.S. S 82 and forced Alamogordo Public Schools to cancel classes.

The rockslide occurred just two miles west of High Rolls, where the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) continues to clear large rocks and debris from the road.

New Mexico Department of Transportation officials advised those who drive through U.S. 82 to take an alternative route through N.M. 244 as all directions of traffic are closed on the highway.

Officials ask that drivers use caution as speeds have been reduced and there is personnel and equipment in the area.

Due to the road closure High Rolls Elementary, Chaparral and Alamogordo High School students will all be attending class remotely today.

“Please be advised that High Rolls Mountain Park Elementary School will be closed today and students will learn remotely today due to a rock slide on Highway 82. The High Rolls Mountain Park school bus will be unable to pick up the Chaparral and High School students,” read a release from Alamogordo Public Schools.

For update information on the road closure visit NMDOT’s website.
