Rockville High School Seniors Surprised With Lawn Signs

VERNON, CT — Rockville High School seniors had quite the surprise this week and staffers delivered lawn signs to their homes to commemorate their upcoming graduation. Seniors have been isolated with the school being closed, classes being taken remotely and activities suspended amid coronavirus restrictions.

The idea was brought to school system administrators by Claudia Lerch, the mom of Class of 2020 member McKenna Lerch. Lerch said she is part of a national Facebook group for Class of 2020 Parents.

"There were posts of lawn signs done by other school districts and I thought that was a great idea to show support for our seniors," she said.

Lerch approached Vernon Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary and RHS Principal Jason Magao asking if the Board of Education would be interested in sponsoring the lawn signs.

Macary said Monday morning he never hesitated to have the school system pick up the tab. At about the same time, Magao sent out an e-mail to senior parents letting them know about the surprise.

Staff and faculty members then took to the streets to deliver the signs.

"This is such a difficult time for seniors — who are missing out on some of the most memorable times of their last year of high school," Lerch said. "I think it’s especially important to keep that connection between our seniors and the school community that supports them. It makes me happy to see the social media posts of seniors with their signs and messages from proud parents. I hope this gesture serves as a reminder to the senior class of 2020 we are all in this together and they have not been forgotten."
