Rockville's Doyle keeps Stafford off balance in baseball win

Apr. 28—The Rockville High baseball team's win over Stafford on Friday was wild.

Tiarnan Doyle survived seven walks to come within one out of finishing a no-hitter and the Rams took advantage of Bulldogs' miscues to score four runs in the top of the seventh inning and take a 5-2 NCCC victory at Stafford High.

Peter Glidden got the final out to complete the no-hitter after Doyle was removed after reaching the CIAC limit of 110 pitches. The win clinched a berth in the Class L state tournament for Rockville (8-3).

Doyle and Stafford's Collin Gudeman matched zeroes in a pitcher's duel until the Rams broke through in the top of the sixth with an unearned run. But Doyle struggled with his control in the bottom of the sixth, hitting two batters and walking three. Bases-loaded walks to Gudeman and Hayden Iacobucci put Stafford ahead 2-1.

But the Rams bailed out Doyle with a seventh-inning rally.

Alex Stoner led off with a single and stole second. Nolan Finan reached on a dropped third strike, putting runners at the corners. After Finan took second, Carson Morgan's sacrifice fly tied it and moved Finan to third.

Connor Michaelson lined out to first base but a throw to double-up Finan at third was errant and allowed Rockville to go back in front. The Rams would add two insurance runs.

Doyle retired the first two batters before reaching the pitch limit. He finished with 11 strikeouts and threw 113 pitches. Glidden came on and walked the first batter he faced before right fielder Dylan Aafedt made a fine catch at the fence to rob Iacobucci and end it.

Glidden had three hits for the Rams.

Gudeman pitched 6Î innings and gave up four hits and one earned run. He fanned four.

Stafford entertains Somers Monday. Rockville visits Tolland Tuesday.

WINDSOR LOCKS 6, BOLTON 2. Allen Hinckley had three hits including a double, an RBI and scored two runs as the Raiders won a NCCC game in Bolton.

Hinckley, a senior, finished 3-for-3 with a walk for Windsor Locks (7-5). Teammate Adan Hernandez added two hits including a double and a run scored while Nathan DeMonti chipped in two hits.

Sophomore Jayden Ramirez got the win. He allowed two runs — one of them earned — on four hits, struck out eight and walked one in five innings.

Sam Segar had two doubles and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (3-10). Bryan Diehl added two hits while Logan Ledoux had a double and a run scored. Josh Wagner took the loss, striking out eight in five innings.

Windsor Locks visits Suffield Monday while Bolton is off until Friday when it travels to East Granby.

RHAM 7, ENFIELD 2. In Hebron, Fayz Baig went 3-for-4, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning for RHAM in its CCC East victory.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the home half of the third, Connor Rydel drew a leadoff walk for the Raptors (7-3), moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to center by Sean Senes tying things up at 1-1.

Sean Connolly reached on an error and one pitch later, Baig hit the ball over the left-field fence to give RHAM a 4-1 lead.

Enfield (6-4) got a run back in the fourth when Trent Barrows scored on an infield groundout before RHAM tacked on three runs in the fifth.

Max Nylen doubled in the first run while Ethan Polochanin and Landon Bell each added run-scoring groundouts.

Bell also picked up the win on the mound — throwing a complete-game six-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk. Senes added two hits and scored a run and Nylen had two hits and scored twice.

Braiden Alaimo singled with an RBI for Enfield.

Both teams play on Monday. RHAM hosts Southington and Enfield visits East Catholic.

BERLIN 6, GLASTONBURY 5. In Glastonbury, Berlin scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun the host Guardians in CCC interdivisional action.

Gavin Carrubba had two hits and scored twice for the Redcoats (5-5). Reliever John O'Brien struck out all nine batters he faced for the win. It was Berlin's second one-run win over Glastonbury (8-3) in eight days.

The Guardians visit Tolland Monday.

SOUTH WINDSOR 5, MIDDLETOWN 4: In South Windsor, Justin Dittmar's two-run single in the seventh capped a three-run rally as the Bobcats (7-4) extended their winning streak to five in the CCC interdivisional game.

Dittmar's hit was preceded by a bases-loaded walk. Andrew Goulet had three hits for South Windsor, and Ben Balducci picked up the win in relief. Middletown is 5-5.
