Rodents & roaches among reasons these New Orleans area restaurants fail health inspection
Some residents and visitors to South Mississippi will choose to dine in the New Orleans area over Christmas and New Year’s.
As in Mississippi, the Louisiana Health Department inspects restaurants for safety and cleanliness, with several failing their inspections in December.
Restaurants in Louisiana are cited for critical violations that are more likely to lead to food contamination or illness and must be corrected immediately. These violations are similar to a C grade in Mississippi’s restaurant inspection grading system.
Non-critical violations are issues that could become critical if left uncorrected, according to the Retail Food Inspection website, and should be corrected by the next regular inspection, or according to the compliance schedule.
Louisiana waits a week after the inspection to release the reports. These restaurants were cited from Dec. 1-11:
Slidell restaurants
Morenita Plus, 127 Gause Blvd. W, Slidell had inspection Dec. 6.
It was cited for:
▪ Raw animal foods not separated to prevent cross contamination in meat cooler.
▪ Meat prep table not clean to sight and touch
Corrected on site were:
▪ Raw meat storage bottom of prep table
▪ Single use gloves not discarded after interruptions in food operations
▪ Chemicals stored with or above food or equipment
It also had 10 non-critical violations
A follow-up inspection on Dec. 11 showed no violations
The Original Italian Pie, 1319 Gause Blvd., Slidell, had a routine/renewal inspection Dec 4. It was cited for:
▪ Roaches present
▪ Flies present
▪ Chlorine sanitizer concentration for warewashing not at correct levels. Warewashing is the process of collecting and washing dishes.
Corrected on site was: Ice machine and can opener not clean to sight and touch.
It also had eight non-critical violations
At a follow-up inspection on Dec. 7, corrected on site were flies and roaches present.
Papa John’s Pizza 1181 Robert Blvd., Slidell, had a routine/renewal inspection Nov. 27 and was cited for:
▪ Cutting board not clean to sight and touch
▪ Air gap between water supply inlet and the flood rim of the plumbing fixture or equipment is incorrect size
Corrected during the inspection was:
▪ Food prepared on premises and held for more than 24 hours not date marked
▪ Chemicals stored with or above food or equipment
It also had seven non-critical violations.
Follow-up inspection Dec. 6 showed critical violations were corrected.
New Mr. Joe Chinese Restaurant, 1480 Gause Blvd., Slidell, had a routine/renewal inspection Nov. 28. It was cited for:
▪ Food prepared on premises and held for more than 24 hours is not date marked.
▪ Equipment and/or utensils are not constructed of approved materials — container with rice not food grade; using metal can containers to store food
Corrected on site were:
▪ Employee did not wash hands and exposed portions of arms at inappropriate time.
▪ Food contact surfaces and utensils are not clean to sight and touch — some type of scoop used not clean and was discarded, can opener
▪ 3 compartment sink is not used in proper sequence to wash, rinse and sanitize — educated
It also had 21 non-critical violations.
It was inspected Dec. 5, but no follow-up report was posted.
McDonald’s, 3096 Gause Blvd E., Slidell had a renewal/routine inspection Dec. 8. It was cited for: Flies present. It also had four non-critical violations.
A follow-up inspection on Dec. 11 showed no critical violations.
New Orleans
Sake Cafe Restaurant, 2830 Magazine St., New Orleans, had a routine/renewal inspection Dec. 6. It was cited for:
▪ Rodents present
▪ Insects present
▪ Food prepared on premises and held for more than 24 hours not date marked.
▪ Written procedures not maintained in a food establishment using time only, as a public health control
▪ Equipment/utensil with which food is prepared, held or served, was not cleaned, rinsed and sanitized prior to use.
▪ Raw animal food not separated from ready to eat food, or is placed above ready to eat food (repeat)
▪ Equipment and/or utensils are not constructed of approved materials — cans
▪ Food contact surfaces and utensils are not clean to sight and touch — rice bowl (repeat)
▪ 3 compartment sink is not used in proper sequence to wash, rinse and sanitize.
