Roe v. Wade: Dayton reproductive rights group plans regular protests until November midterms

More than two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade to send the question on the legality and right to abortion back to the states, hundreds of people gathered in downtown Dayton on Sunday to protest the decision.

Better than 400 turned out to display their continuing displeasure with the nation’s highest court.

The messages displayed on the signs and posters they carried -- “Abort the Court” and “Abortion Bans Only Stop Safe Abortions” -- were emblematic of their stance in contrast to pro-life supporters such as Vivian Skovgard, who News Center 7′s Molly Koweek interviewed the day the decision was announced.

“We want America to be abortion free, be illegal in the United States of America,” Skovgard said then.

Supporters from both sides said they intend to continue to express their views openly and loudly.

Sunday, Rachel Gannon, who with her sister organized the Dayton protest for reproductive rights, said, “enough is enough.”

Supporters from both sides said they intend to continue to fight for and against abortion.

“We’re going to make this a monthly event, pun intended, the first Sunday of every month,” Gannon said. “We’re going to have another event, up until the last one being the Sunday before Election Day,” referring to the midterm general elections that are held near the midpoint of a president’s four-year term of office.

This year, the midterm elections are scheduled for Nov. 8.

“We’re in July. November is far but it’s not far, and we can’t get complacent,” Gannon said.

“And just say you know, just it is what it is and we can’t change anything because we can. We can get to the polls. We can vote and we can make a difference.”

Gannon said the next protest is scheduled for Aug. 7 at a location she’ll announce in the next few days.
